Resumo:The present study aims to study self-esteem as a protective factor for mental health. It is remarkable that self-esteem is of great relevance since it can influence and affect  people's behavior towards society and their relationships, as this will contribute significantly to how the individual will react to the circumstances of life. From a literature  review on the subject, which analyzed studies with subjects of both sexes from 7 to  70 years, it was noticed that the higher the individual's self-esteem, the better his  adaptive process and the better his protective factor for mental health will be. In this  context, the construction of self-esteem that begins in childhood and will continue to  be under construction throughout its development, will involve factors, social, cultural, and emotional, always going through the process of subjectivity of the individual.  When these formations are benign, it provides the basis for facing a variety of different.
