Resumo:The life and teaching of Jesus have had a huge impact on the world for centuries. About two thousand years after his death, what he said and did is still infl uencing people from many different socio-cultural levels. Therefore it is important to understand that Jesus belonged to a tradition fi rmly established by his ancestors. The principal representative of that tradition is prophetism. The aspect of Jesus’ ministry where we can better see the prophetic infl uence is his preaching. Such infl uence is present in two main elements of his preaching: the style (prophetic authority, combination of proclamation and prediction, use of parables, use of symbolic actions) and the contents (call to repentance, announcement of the Kingdom of God as an immediate reality, divine requirements, announcement of the divine judgment, prophecy of salvation, criticism of the national religion, criticism of the offi cial leadership).
