| Resumo: | The knowledge about the Buddha and the early years of Buddhism can be enhanced by contrast with other peoples of the time. The study presented aimed to verify mentions of the historical Buddha or Buddhism through a bibliographic search in indexers and historical documents. The Buddha would have belonged to a dissident social movement according to the texts of the Tipitaka and Upanishads. His life was marked by the search for an end to mental unrest and his activities were aimed to creating social harmony based on non-violence and individual freedom. Similarities between Buddhism and Greek thinkers were identified in the works of philosophers and historians. Inscriptions on Emperor Asoka's stones show that Buddhism may have expanded with political support. This information indicates that Primitive Buddhism could be widespread in libertarian and pacifist ideals of the time. |
