Even after the separation of state and religion, with the establishment of the republic, the Catholic religion, above all, was not restricted to the private sphere and continued to exert influence in the public sphere, including through legal concessions. This situation allowed not only the Catholic Church to continue to influence Brazilian society, but also raised disputes among other religions, which slowly began to claim their importance for society, especially in the case of Protestantism. In this paper I present some theoretical currents about secularization and laicization of modern societies seeking to make a retrospective of the interwining between religion and space/public sphere. O Brasil, desde sua “descoberta” foi se tornando católico por imposição dos colonizadores e o catolicismo foi a religião oficial brasileira até à proclamação da República. Após a separação entre Estado e Religião, com a instauração da República, o catolicismo não se restringiu à esfera privada e continuou a exercer influência no âmbito público, inclusive através de concessões legais. Esse quadro permitiu que não só a Igreja Católica continuasse a exercer influência na sociedade brasileira, como também suscitou disputas entre outras religiões, que lentamente passaram a reivindicar sua importância para a sociedade, principalmente no caso do protestantismo. Neste trabalho, apresento algumas correntes teóricas sobre secularização e laicização das sociedades modernas, assim como busco fazer um retrospecto das imbricações entre a(s) religião(ões) e espaço/esfera pública no Brasil.
