The records are source of proof of organizational activities, need to be preserved correctly, for guarantee their future access. Preservation actions require planning and investment by organizations, which need to be supported by a well-founded document that includes the objectives and guidelines to be adopted: the policy for the preservation of digital records. This document, already known by most professionals, is not yet adopted in most Brazilian Higher Education Institutions. This article presents experiences of four Brazilian HEIs that have a policy of preserving digital records. This article presents the results obtained from semistructured interviews conducted with the managers responsible for the constitution and submission of the document for approval by the senior management of the HEIs. This article sought to identify actions and good practices to be developed by HEIs that have not yet started the process of constituting this document, which is essential to the planning and implementation of digital preservation actions in the organization.
