Resumo:Introduction: Bone marrow transplantation is the best treatment for the most of bone marrow (BM) diseases. Currently, the number of registrants for bone marrow donation has been increasing, however it is still less than ideal. Objective: Assess the main reasons that lead to decision to register or not for BM donation in order to increase the adherence to the register in Registro Nacional de Doadores de Medula Óssea (Redome). Material and Methods: Quantitative and descriptive research realized around the health units of Juiz de Fora, with questionnaire application to a sample composed of 448 citizens, ranging from 18 to 55 years old, without diseases that contraindicate donation. The questionnaire was produced by the authors based on thorough literature review. Demographic variables and barriers to registration were evaluated to be a donor of BM. Results: Among the interviewees, the age mean was 32,6 years, with 50,2% female, 52,6% white, 51% with income between 1 and 3 minimum salaries and 55% graduated at high school. Amid them, 89,7% of the interviewees declared not to be registered as donators. It was concluded that older people are 3.39 more likely to register, while non-whites are 55.1% less likely to register. Conclusions: The factor that contributes the most to low adherence to the register is lack of information. Moreover, the media information and the donation campaigns of bone marrow made by public healthy sectors are factors that would inform population about this theme. Therefore, it would influence on the registration.
