Sumario:This qualitative-type research aims at highlighting, based on emerging texts found in the social net Facebook, the importance of the word-formation processes to the teaching of the Portuguese language and at confirming the creation of new words as a recurring condition on the virtual environment. To do so, the research characterizes the emerging virtual texts and the use of the language in such environments. After that, it describes Facebook and analyses the social net and how its members use the Portuguese language when connected. Following that, there is an approach to the transformations created by media technologies on society and how such social changes stimulate linguistic variations. The central purpose of this research is to identify and describe the neologisms found in the messages written on Facebook in order to, from an analysis and classification of these units, think about the impact they create in the teaching of the Portuguese language. The lexicographic principle of the dictionary register was used to delimit the neologisms. On this perspective, a neologism is a lexical item which is still not found in the dictionary. With this research it was possible to verify that there are numerous methods of word-formation on Facebook and that the graphic variation is the most frequent kind. Hence, it was also made a reflection about the importance of the neologisms on Portuguese language classroom considering the emerging virtual genres as a tool to be used in the teaching of the mother tongue.
