| Sumario: | In spite of the promising position occupied and with the exception of recently published papers, the Florestan Fernandes’s articles and books on the phenomenon immigration in Brazil is neither remembered nor treated in the various academic works, books and collections organized about his work and career. We show here that Florestan's immigration analysis, published between the 1940s and 1970s, lost its importance in parallel with the consolidation, in the 1950s and 1960s, of major themes in Brazilian sociology, such as racial inequality, classes and capitalism. This thematic move in Florestan's work, from cultural conflicts among ethnic and community groups to racial inequality, classes and capitalism in Brazil and Latin America, beaconed the trajectory of the immigration sociology subfield and of the Brazilian sociology as whole, until the 1960s and 1970s. In consequence, it provoked an eclipse of the history of this subfield, only reinvigorated in the 1980s when it was expanded towards international migrations theme. Nevertheless, his works are still current and important for the history of the subfield and even for the general understanding of the history of the Brazilian sociology. |
