Hydrogeological studies using such tracers are lacking in Brazil. Potential reasons are the need of specific knowledge, expertise and equipment. The reader will find in this paper a brief description of the methods used to measure Ra and Rn isotopes and the basic foundations that guide these applications.O presente trabalho teve como objetivo servir como um guia orientador àqueles que desejam utilizar os isótopos de rádio (228Ra, 226Ra, 224Ra, 223Ra) e o 222Rn, como traçadores naturais, em estudos envolvendo a descarga de água subterrânea para a região costeira (Submarine Groundwater Discharge, SGD) e, também, para rios e lagoas. Nota- se, uma carência de estudos hidrogeológicos desenvolvidos no Brasil empregando- se tais traçadores. Como potenciais razões para tal estão a necessidade de conhecimento e de equipamentos especializados.
