Sumario:The romantic poet, historian and critic Robert Southey became interested in Portuguese culture. He wrote about the work of Luís de Camões and left translations of his poems. In this essay, I discuss how the British critic read Os Lusíadas (The Lusiads), focusing on an article that he published in the important The Quarterly Review, in 1822, as well as on other writings of the author about this subject. I examine the approach that Southey followed when he wrote about the poem and analise the comments that he made about the English translations of Os Lusíadas which hitherto were published.
