Sumario:Introduction: Since its inception to present day surfing in his career became one of the most popular sports in the world. By its popularity saw a need to asses ways to prevent injuries caused by the pratice of this modality. Objective: To evaluate the physical training of amateur surfers and the incidence of these injuries. Materials and Methods: This study evaluated thought a questionnaire, 33 amateur surfers, male, mean age 27, 2 ±6,2 years, who surfed between 3-4 hours per week on average. Results: The sample reported 122 injuries, where 26,2% were lacerations, 22,1% contusions and 20,5% burns. The surfboard was largely responsible for the injuries (26,2%) e more than half of the individuals (62%) did not perform a training focused on the surf during the injurie. Discussion: It was found that surfers who kept a regular training reported fewer injuries or less serious injuries and that the most efficient way in preventing injuries in surfing, cited by surfers, was functional training. Conclusion: The surf is a safe sport that can cause injuries and that specific training aimed at better performance in the surf can prevent injuries.
