| Resumo: | This dissertation aims to describe and analyze master and doctoral researches from 1980 to 2012 about mid vowels in unstressed position in Brazilian Portuguese pronunciation.Starting from a literature review of the subject, using the research synthesis methodology (Norris and Ortega, 2006) and the statistical meta-analysis (Glass, 1977), we discuss the results of investigations on the pretonic vocalism which had the support of the theory ofvariation, referenced by William Labov in the 60s and 70s. We tried to identify what was in common in relation to the analysis of social and linguistic factors considered enhancers or inhibitors of alternating mid vowels before and after, which sometimes can be realizedas [e ~ D~ i ] e [o ~ N ~ u ] in several dialects in Brazil.It was observed that the search for the best model to explain the phenomenon of variation affecting these vowels follow the same pattern over more than thirty years of research, and the model of quantitative sociolinguistics, with few insertions phonological theories.Twenty-eight (28) master's theses and ten (10) doctoral dissertations were used as references, covering almost all Brazilian regions. From this material, we extract the linguistic and non-linguistic factors, observed by researchers as independent variables, as well as the result of action of these factors in the realization of unstressed.The data produced from the results of all researches, organized in tables, allowed us to compare the differences and similarities between them, and show what can still be discussed in relation to pretonic vocalism. This research found no answers to the pretonic alternation.However, it showed a greater influence from linguistic factors for its realization. It is possible that no phonological theory can explain the type of vowel variation discussed here, because the linguistic phenomena are related to a dynamic language phenomenon that involves a set of internal and external attractors (Oliveira, 2013). However, complexitytheory has much to offer to future researches on the pretonic vocalism , and the search for an effective answer to this question. |
