The hypothesis is that, in a moment of uncertainty over United States’ commitment with their Asian traditional partners and allies, India and Japan are encouraged to develop new mechanisms to balance against China. According to the Realist school of International Relations, India and Japan will virtually seek manners to balance against China in order to defend their interests. This paper develops the argument using the concepts of ‘balancing of threat’ and ‘soft balancing’ to describe the strategies developed by these countries within the Indo-Pacific. Este artigo desenvolve o argumento usando os conceitos de "equilíbrio da ameaça" e "balanceamento suave" para descrever as estratégias desenvolvidas por esses países dentro do Indo-Pacífico.UFRGS2018-12-31info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://seer.ufrgs.br/index.php/ConjunturaAustral/article/view/8723210.22456/2178-8839.87232Conjuntura Austral; Vol. 9 No. 48 (2018); 115 - 131Conjuntura Austral; Vol. 9 Núm. 48 (2018); 115 - 131Conjuntura Austral; v. 9 n. 48 (2018); 115 - 1312178-8839reponame:Conjuntura Australinstname:Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)instacron:UFRGSenghttps://seer.ufrgs.br/index.php/ConjunturaAustral/article/view/87232/51935info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessNicolini Gabriel, João PauloCarvalho, Carlos Eduardo2021-05-20T12:18:13Zoai:seer.ufrgs.br:article/87232Revistahttps://seer.ufrgs.br/ConjunturaAustralPUBhttps://seer.ufrgs.br/ConjunturaAustral/oaiconjunturaaustral@ufrgs.br||reisdasilva@hotmail.com||nerint@ufrgs.br||andre.reis@ufrgs.br2178-88392178-8839opendoar:https://seer.ufrgs.br/ConjunturaAustral/oaihttps://seer.ufrgs.br/ConjunturaAustral/oai2021-05-20T12:18:13Conjuntura Austral - Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)false
