Descripción
Sumario:This work consists of a proposal of analysis of the short story The slave, by the writer Maria Firmina dos Reis ([1877] 2004). Our objective is to analyze how the construction of the slave Joana, from what the said writer sees and makes us see through the voice that I attributed to his narrator. To do so, we will base ourselves on the discussions proposed by Bauman (2005), regarding the thematic of identity; Hartog (1999) and Baggio (2009), on the Rhetoric of otherness; as well as Lobo (2006) and Muzart (1999), on the life and works of Maria Firmina dos Reis. From the analysis, it was possible to understand that the author problematizes, in his short story The slave, the slave and chauvinist system experienced in Brazilian society in the XIX century. To carry out such a movement, the writer dares to give place and voice to the slave girl, Joana, who had been silenced throughout her life.
