| Sumario: | This article presents a translation into Portuguese, with an introduction and notes, of the preface to the third book of Seneca the Elder’s Controversies. The text not only provides a portrait of the orator Cassius Severus, but also sets out and comments on his views on the relationship between institutional oratory and scholastic declamation. The criticism of declamation, presented in the context of the schools of rhetoric, is a recurrent topic in several authors of Latin antiquity, and the preface translated here constitutes one of the most relevant examples on the subject. |
