Descripción
Sumario:The Brazilian writer Pedro Nava (1903-1984) conciliated literature and history in his Memoirs. This study aims to expose a collection of (auto)biographical accounts about slavery presented by the memoirist in Baú de Ossos (1972) and Balão Cativo (1973). The objective is to comment on some issues that these accounts reveal on slavery and the life of the slaves related to Pedro Nava’s family. The analysis indicates that the abolition of slavery in Brazil did not significantly change the life of freed slaves. Many black or mulato men, women and children continued to live and work as servants and dependents in a condition analogous to slavery.
