| Sumario: | The search for better results in high performance sports has clearly grown, and much has been done in order to make it real. One way of achieving that is by ergogenic resources, in which we make use of certain substances on an attempt to increase physical strength, mental power, and mechanic efficiency. These resources can be of different kinds: mechanic or bio-mechanic, psychological, or nutritional. One of those resources is caffeine, characterized by a nutritional ergogenic resource, which is an easy-access substance for the population due to its presence in many beverages and foods. The objective of this study is to display, through a bibliographic research, the possible influences of caffeine as an ergogenic resource in physical exercises, as well as its metabolic actions and possible side effects. After the analysis of practical studies it’s possible to confirm that caffeine is a powerful ergogenic resource, increasing the lipolysis rate in the exercise and theoretically sparing the use of glycogen, improving contraction power and reducing fatigue. However, it is still inconclusive the action mechanisms involved on this performance improvement. Nothing has been practically confirmed in relation to possible side effects. |
