Sumario:Maternity exercise in Brazilian prison system faces several difficulties, since the specificities inherent to female sex, as well as menstruation and intimate hygiene, gynecology and gender inequalities, to pregnancy, hormonal changes, breastfeeding and the puerperium. Generally, incarcerated women commit crimes in search of subsistence for their young and, imprisoned, they are forced to abandon family life and leave their children in the care of others, furthermore, offspring are emotionally abandoned by all. Alternative measures to liberty deprivation are, for example, the penalty that restricts rights or a fine, as alternatives that seek to implement the right to coexistence between mothers and their young, therefore the best interests of the child and the greatest integrity of women are guaranteed.
