Hans Jonas conceived freedom differently from tradition when he proposed the understanding of freedom as “a way of executing the existence” of living beings. Basically, freedom configures a principle of perception and action inherent to all organic existence, to the extent that, in order to continue to exist, every organism has to carry out metabolic “action” and, for that, it is necessary to be minimally “informed” about the environment. surrounding. That is, by freedom we can designate a natural way of being proper to living beings. However, freedom is expressed in different degrees in organic existence and is intrinsically linked to the evolution of life forms. The present work proposes to present Jonas's main considerations on the idea of freedom as a biological principle. The main arguments of the philosopher's hypothesis will be examined, which postulates the prefiguration of mind or spirit even in the most primitive forms of organic being.A tradição filosófica ocidental, de modo geral, compreende a liberdade como um fenômeno exclusivamente humano, já que nós somos (ou seríamos) os únicos seres que desfrutam da possibilidade de se autodeterminar em um universo regido por leis necessárias. Hans Jonas concebeu a liberdade de modo distinto da tradição ao propor a compreensão de liberdade como “uma maneira de executar a existência” própria dos seres vivos. Basicamente, a liberdade configura um princípio de percepção e de ação inerente a toda existência orgânica, na medida em que para continuar existindo todo organismo tem de realizar a “ação” metabólica e, para tanto, é necessário estar minimamente “informado” sobre o ambiente circundante. Ou seja, por liberdade podemos designar um modo natural de ser próprio dos viventes. Contudo, a liberdade se expressa em graus diversos na existência orgânica e está intrinsecamente ligada à evolução das formas de vida. O presente trabalho se propõe a apresentar as principais considerações de Jonas sobre a ideia de liberdade como princípio biológico.
