Resumo:This article aims at analyzing the representation of English teachers on an Instagram post by the Movimento Escola Sem Partido account, which condemns the critical work of English language teachers in Brazilian schools. For this, it seeks to reflect on the consequences of fake news on the formation of citizens, as well as on the increase in cases of violence against the LGBTQIAP+ community. In order to discuss the importance of teaching and learning English in a critical way, this research uses a qualitative methodology (DÖRNYEI, 2006), and is based on the Grammar of Visual Design (KRESS; VAN LEEWUEN ([1996] 2021) to investigate the relation between the visual elements and the comments on the post and in what ways they reinforce anti-LGBTQIAP+ discourses. The results indicate that the use of social networks by politians and part of the more conservative society, in recent years, has created a “sensation” of truth (BUCCI, 2018), which condemns different gender identities and sexual orientations (LINS et al., 2016; JUNQUEIRA, 2017, among others). Therefore, this article affirms the importance of fighting against fake news in different types of media, and also in schools, in order to create what Brazilian official documents, such as the Base Nacional Comum Curricular (BNCC), defend: the improvement of students’ critical literacy (JANKS, 2016) and multilteracies (ROJO; MOURA, 2012) of students, in building a more egalitarian society.
