Sumario:ABSTRACT This book aims to throw glances and questions about the reflections of the so-called body culture, or somatic culture, in contemporary subjectivity. In the current scenario, with the incessant action of the media and advertising, in the face of the improvement of biomedical technologies, the body becomes - more than an object of desire - a stage of reinvention and reformatting itself, a kind of constant work mutation and update. Because of this, changes in their anatomy are increasingly common, both through simple practices such as bodybuilding, diets, drugs and cosmetics, and through plastic surgeries, implants, prostheses, and even voluntary amputations. As the natural, organic body becomes devalued, becoming obsolete, the technological body, the product of constant investment in its appearance, comes on the scene, appearing as a spectacle, ready to be consumed visually. It is the spectacular body of media images. This is the central axis of O Corpo-spectata: the TV and reality shows of plastic surgery, a book that results from research developed in the doctoral program of the Post-Graduation Program in Communication and Culture of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, in the period from 2006 to 2010. Taking as the object of analysis the reality shows of plastic surgery, which here is conventionally called reality shows of corporal intervention, this investigation seeks to map the construction of the media body in contemporary culture: a body at the same time which has been influenced by technology applied to aesthetic medicine - and spectacularized - turned into a spectacle - by communication vehicles, especially television. Considering that the television audience has shown an increasing interest in mediations that contemplate the exacerbated consumption of body preparation, intervention reality shows are a fertile field for observations and reflections on the concepts of media, body, technology and subjectivities, since they present themselves as privileged spaces of visibility, where we can examine the way in which the TV shows the corporal metamorphoses and the technology for the common sense, producing in series (also televising and without pun intended!), the new bodies of the contemporaneity , born of the marriage between the media and technoscience. The choice of theme is therefore quite timely, because in a country that holds the second place in the world in number of plastic surgeries, TV programs dedicated to promoting and / or accompanying ordinary subjects in the process of redefining the appearance reach public and the discussions that follow raise important questions. What is the body in the contemporary world? What is the role of reality shows in the processes of constitution of subjects in the present time? What is the importance of the body and television images in the production of subjectivities? And what would be the effects, in contemporary society, of this exacerbated appreciation of the market of appearances, which, in spite of the peculiar aspects of the organicity of the human body, relentlessly seeks a "perfect" body without wrinkles or marks, a kind of body-image-digital ? Through the analysis of the programs Extreme Makeover and Dr. Hollywood, this research seeks to focus on the mechanisms and devices used by the television media to propose ways of being, acting, being and, above all, having a body in the current culture, reasserting and enthroning , in this context, the bodies modeled by technoscience. Focusing on the socio-cultural repercussions of these productions, we investigate the role that television has played in encouraging and offering concrete possibilities for the individual to transform into the body-show, making the corporal reformatting and overexposure of this new body a show for the court hearing. In analyzing empirical material under the bias of self-esteem, corporate culture, the grotesque confession of intimacy and authenticity, this research reveals how these programs are ways in which the culture of contemporary subjectivity has been incorporated into our techniques for understanding and perfecting the self , in relation to what is socially accepted, in line with the hegemonic interests of the market. Given the current and complex nature of the subject and its insertion in a transdisciplinary field, The Body-show: TV and plastic surgery reality shows interest readers from several areas: social sciences, psychology, psychoanalysis, education and, mainly, Communication. In addition, by including diverse perspectives of analysis, this book brings together themes that awaken debates that go beyond the academic universe, offering the reader a multifaceted and complex panorama of the forces that are at stake, of the current debate on the subject, as well as the alternatives that present themselves.
