Sumario:This study presents a sterilization device with an alternative heat source. The device for application in the saturated steam sterilization area is intended to serve areas without access to electricity. A saturated steam autoclave prototype was constructed using a pressure cooker with some additional monitoring devices. The tests were done by heating it using a flame of a gas stove. The effectiveness of sterilization was determined by biological indicators and chemical integrators. All functionality tests followed the recommendations of applicable standards for sterilizers requirements, ABNT NBR 11817: 2001 and EN 13060: 2004. The sterilization temperature used was 121 ° C for a period of 30 minutes. The loads used were of metallic dental instruments. Tests were performed to determine the best way of drying the loads and cycles to evaluate the sterilization process, including drying the material. The result of biological indicators and chemical integrators indicates that the system is fully effective for sterilization of materials through saturated steam. And since the device regulates its internal pressure and temperature, any source with sufficient heat to maintain boiling for the necessary time can be used.
