| Sumario: | Introduction: Physical exercise is considered an effective strategy for reducing symptoms of depression and improving cognitive functions. Objective: To summarize the effect of physical exercise on cognitive functions in depressed elderly people. Methods: A systematic review was conducted in seven databases, using 32 descriptors in the English language, organized into four command groups. Results: Two clinical trials were included, one applying combined training and another using Tai Chi Chih. The intervention period ranged from 4 to 14 weeks. The physical exercise sessions ranged from 1 to 2 hours in duration. There was a significant effect on the LPS-3 test for the group that performed the combined exercise (t (5) = -2668, p = 0.044). The elderly subjects who practiced Tai Chi Chih presented better performance in the late recall and decreased the errors in the A track test (pre: 0.44 ± 0.72, post: 0.19 ± 0.47). Conclusion: There was an improvement in cognitive functions, specifically in the domains of attention and executive function. |
