Descripción
Sumario:This paper draws a comparison between Fernando Ortiz's concept of "transculturation" and Gilberto Freyre's idea of "interpenetration". To that end, we focus on the most important book of each author. The first one, Contrapunteo cubano del tabaco y el azúcar, published in 1940, emphasised the importance of the two agricultural crops in Cuba's economic system and their influence on its racial formation. The second text, Casa Grande & Senzala, published by Gilberto Freyre in 1933, explored the dynamics of the sugar cane plantation and its implications for the lives of whites and blacks in Brazil. Both texts offered a general theory of their societies and, as such, show how the interpretations of two Latin American contexts point in relatively similar directions, but with subtle particularities.
