Sumario:This article presents an investigation on linguistic strategies used to build the ethos of an Indigenous candidate in an argumentative text, produced in the Fourteenth University Entrance Exam of the Indigenous Peoples of Paraná/2016/Unioeste. Specifically, in a qualitative approach, the objective is to analyze the construction of the ethos by means of the referring process in the constitution of the discourse objects “Indian” and “Indigenous peoples” and the uses of the first person plural (inflected verbs and pronouns) mainly with exclusive function. For this purpose, the theoretical contribution that supports the analysis of the construction of ethos by means of the referring process and linguistic elements in the first person plural is based on the sociocognitive-interactionist approach and on multidisciplinary proposals related to Argumentation, such as Rhetoric, Textual Linguistics, Cognitive Linguistics and Pragmatics. The results show that the referring process and the modalizers with an exclusive function are mobilized by the candidate to build a contrastive ethos (Indigenous and/or non-Indigenous), they signal the producer’s point of view and lead to the argumentative orientation of the text, through the triadic composition ethos, pathos and logos.
