Sumario:The ideal of nobility has undergone several mutations throughout the Old Regime, being variable according to context and spatiality, and there is no single understanding on the subject. The plurality of overseas nobility can be seen in the work Frutas do Brasil, specifically in the chapter On the state of the nobility, by Friar Antônio do Rosário, who lived in the sugar society of Pernambuco for fifteen years, between 1689 and 1704. This work seeks to understand the meaning of nobility, especially in Pernambuco in the early 18th century, focusing on the different models of ascension and social legitimacy overseas. Therefore, this research will analyze part of the book Frutas do Brasil, a rich source on the hierarchy and social composition of that time, crossing information from the legal treaties and sources from the Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino, the Arquivo da Universidade de Coimbra and the Biblioteca Nacional de Lisboa.
