Descripción
Sumario:This article aims to analyze the profile and trajectories of the individuals appointed to the post of Capitão-Mor of the Siará Grande captaincy between 1679 and 1720. This study was based on the analysis of the profile of the candidates chosen by the Portuguese Crown for the administration of the captaincy, examining their trajectories and the services rendered to the Portuguese Empire and how they acted in the process of granting sesmarias (portions of land) during their mandates in Siará Grande. The documentary corpus is composed of separate manuscripts from the Overseas Council, sesmarial legislation, letters of sesmarias and appointment letters for the post of capitão-mor recorded in the Registo Geral de Mercês chancery books. It's noteworthy that there was a strong relationship between the context of conquest by which the captaincy was passing and the profile of the candidates selected for the post of Captain-major the men of war.
