| Sumario: | The food system is a major source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission. As emissions vary from product to product, some authors assert that food diets need to change in order allow food production to grow at a minimum environmental impact. Due to the lack of studies on diet-related GHG emissions in Brazil, this paper aims to examine the GHG impact of food diets consumed in every of the 26 Brazilian state capitals plus the Federal district on GHG emissions by individuals of different income brackets. The results show that beef and dairy are the main sources of food-related GHG emissions in Brazil and that the diets of northerners and high-income individuals emit much more. As the food diets consumed in the country vary widely in terms of GHG emission and nutritional value, it is viable to adopt diets that meet nutritional requirements as well as cut GHG emissions. |
