Sumario:Introduction: Diabetes Mellitus is a syndrome of multiple causes, with a prevalence of 10.3% in the elderly, who require self-care treatment. Objectives: To evaluate the self-care of elderly patients with diabetes at a Family Health Strategy service in Teresina (PI). Method: A cross-sectional study was carried out with 55 diabetics of both sexes, aged between 60 and 85 years, enrolled in the Program for Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus at a Family Health Strategy service. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using Epi-info software. Results: The elderly monitored the level of fasting glucose (98.20%), used health services (96.40%) and took oral glycemia-lowering medication (89.00%). The diet followed by 78.20% of the elderly included dairy, meats, fruits, rice and beans; however, 30.90% of these seniors consumed sugars, sweets and soft drinks, all foods that are contraindicated for diabetics. Conclusion: The elderly diabetics showed significant adherence to the self-care program in regard to monitoring glucose levels and following the dietary strategies.
