| Sumario: | The aim of this article is to report the historical background of the main classifications of mental disorders, the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD), of the World Health Organization, and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, DSM) of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), considered hegemonic models in several countries. Understanding the way to establish a psychiatric diagnosis helps mental health professionals to acquire a broad view of how the criteria are established and favors the introduction of appropriate therapies. |
