Sumario:In Brazil, as in many countries, it is mandatory the fortification of salt with iodine in order to avoid severe health disorders caused by iodine deficiency in the body. Resolution RDC Nº 130 of 26/5/2003 rules that the salt suitable for human consumption should contain from 20 to 60 milligrams of iodine per kilogram of product. The iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) may be caused by both lack and excess of iodine. This study evaluated iodine contents in 31 salt samples collected from market in the region of Campinas. The iodine determination was performed in triplicate by means of iodometric titration at the Centro de Laboratório Regional - Instituto Adolfo Lutz, Campinas III. Of the total samples, 10% of them were non compliant with the legislation in force. A gradual improvement in the procedure for salt iodination was found during the study period, since a progressive decrease in the percentage of non-compliant samples has been lately observed: 20% in 2008, 11% in 2009 and 0% in 2010. Iodine contents variations in salt sample occurred in products from the same brand and different lots.
