| Sumario: | Introduction: Treadmill gait training has been recommended in the rehabilitation of people with stroke. As with any health treatment, treadmill training is a potential source of adverse events, and it is important that the assessment, reporting and quality of information about these events are clear and reliable. Objective: To analyze the reporting of adverse events in clinical trials involving treadmill gait training for individuals with stroke. Methods: Systematic review of intervention studies, in which controlled clinical trials (randomized or not), quasi-experimental and crossover-type were considered; and before-after studies. Primary studies should include treadmill gait training in subjects with stroke in at least one of the study groups. Studies that mentioned adverse, observed or evaluated/monitored events were included. Studies with full text, in English, Portuguese and Spanish and with no date restriction were considered. The searches were carried out in the period of October and November 2019 and updated in May and June 2021, as well as in Novemberand December 2022 in the PsyINFO, MEDLINE, CENTRAL, CINAHL, SportDISCUS, LILACS and PEDro databases. Outcomes were analyzed using descriptive statistics regarding the occurrence, assessment, type and severity of adverse events. Results: 51 studies were included, totalizing 1.571 participants. The most evaluated/monitored adverse events in the studies were pain, instability in heart rate and blood pressure; the most observed events were new stroke, medical complications and pain. Adverse events in participants in groups who received treadmill training were reported in a greater number of studies compared to participants who did not train on a treadmill. Few studies used an event assessment strategy, with most not reporting event details, how they were assessed, and the timing of assessment. Conclusion: From this review, we conclude that the reporting of adverse events in studies that performed treadmill training in individuals with stroke is inconsistent and not systematic. Even though it is considered safe, treadmill training seems to be related to the occurrence of adverse events in this population. Although most events are not classified as serious, continuous monitoring and better reporting of adverse events are recommended in studies using treadmill training, especially in individuals withstroke. |
