A judgement task on an invented ‘wug’ word, and what it reveals about the rules of phonological well-formedness. Such tools allow us to push the theory of phonology as a combinatorial system to the limit, and we can go even further, by inventing languages that do or don’t accord with phonological universals, and observe how wellthey’re learned. |
