Sumario:Introduction: Over the years, the mother-woman has sought alternatives to replace breast milk. However, with the increase in cases of early weaning, it has been noticed the frequency of diseases that have affected the natural development of their children. Objective: To analyze the different forms of idealized expression of breastfeeding and the social prejudices over time. Methodology: The research methodology was based on the analysis of scientific journals from the Scientific Electronic Library (SciELO) and Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences (LILACS) databases, as well as the Database on Nursing (BDENF) and the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), aiming at analyzing the impacts of the romanticization of breastfeeding and the role of nurses during the lactation period. Results and Discussion: This study discussed the social pressure around breastfeeding - which often romanticizes breastfeeding - and the importance of nurses' role in supporting mothers during the puerperium, including the promotion of lactation and the provision of information on appropriate breastfeeding techniques. Conclusion: It is necessary to recognize the complexity and individuality of the breastfeeding process so that there are no negative impacts on the mental and emotional health of women who breastfeed.
