| Sumario: | http://dx.doi.org/10.5216/ree.v14i2.14977The objective of this study was to identify, in literature, the best interventions to treat and prevent the loss of skin integrity by the utilization of diapers, as evidenced by dermatitis. A survey was performed on the following databases: LILACS, MedLine, Cochrane and PubMed. A total of 149 publications were located and considered eligible for this review. Nineteen studies met the inclusion criteria and were read in full. It was identified that the current recommendation to prevent the problem is to maintain the cleanliness and dryness of genital/perineal areas; therefore, diapers should be changed more frequently, and a layer of zinc oxide ointment should be applied to the skin, avoiding maceration. The recommended treatment is to use antifungal medication and corticosteroids in cases of associated secondary infection and reactions in the affected skin. It is highlighted that there is a scarcity of literature on this issue, especially involving the elderly. |
