| Summary: | This article aims to shed light on the recent building of indigenous autonomy in Bolivia. The article indicates the existence of legal and political obstacles restricting the development of autonomous indigenous governments in the first ten years after the approval of the Constitution of the Plurinational State of Bolivia in 2009. Despite the legal provision of both the incorporation of state rules and norms in the indigenous autonomic statutes and the state recognition of indigenous local forms of organization, the former prevailed. Nevertheless, this finding does not indicate the defeat of the indigenous autonomy project, as this should be understood as part of a long history of confrontation and negotiation for autonomy between indigenous peoples and the state. |
