| Sumario: | This article seeks to understand the consequences of populism for democracy, focusing on the actions of political leaders who emerged between 2016 and 2022. The first two sections provide a theoretical discussion of this phenomenon in the context of contemporary democracy, drawing on scholars such as Urbinati (2019) and Lynch and Cassimiro (2022). The second part analyzes the speeches of Jair Bolsonaro (Brazil, 2018–2022) and Donald Trump (USA, 2016–2021) during their presidencies. Based on recent literature and discourse analysis, we argue that populism presents a significant challenge to modern democratic regimes, as the rise of populist leaders tends to weaken institutions and undermine fundamental rights. |
