| Sumario: | This article aims to analyze the composition of captive families in Espírito Santo between the years 1850 and 1871, dates marked by the enactment of the abolitionist laws Eusébio de Queirós and Lei do Ventre Livre. The regions of the province of Espírito Santo studied are Vitória, provincial capital, Cachoeiro de Itapemirim and Itapemirim, both in the southern region. The three locations had a diversified economy, and therefore, the composition of their slaves also had peculiarities. Vitória had an economy focused on the internal supply of the province, and its slavery was formed by a majority of Creoles. Cachoeiro had coffee crops for export as its economic source, which was the main economic source of the province. Itapemirim, in turn, produced large amounts of sugar, in addition to being the main exporting port for this product and coffee for the Court. In both Cachoeiro and Itapemirim the presence of Africans was great. These peculiarities are reflected in the composition of slavery and captive families, as will be observed in this work. |
