| Resumo: | This paper presents an ethnographic analysis of intercultural universities, or more specifically, the Universidad Autónoma Comunal de Oaxaca (UACO). The Mexico and intercultural universities are the subject of research by the Amerindian and Frontiers Studies Research Group (GEAF-CNPq), which i lead, particularly focused on the periods from 2020 to 2024. The UACO was made official in 2020 and is currently one of the largest indigenous universities, or communal universities, in the country. Oaxaca has characteristics that contain a unique distinction: it is the state with the greatest ethnic diversity, recognized by indigenous self-governments. The research method is based on an ethnography based on immersion in the field, as well as bibliographical analysis. In this context, the paper is divided into the following sections: (1) intercultural universities around the world; (2) intercultural universities in Mexico and, finally, (3) the challenges of intercultural universities and alternatives to the official model, more specifically, (4) the field immersion at the Universidad Autónoma Comunal de Oaxaca.
