ABSTRACT This exploratory-descriptive and qualitative study was performed with the objective to identify the care relationships between Family Health Strategy nurses and family caregivers of people with cancer, living in a municipality in Northwestern Paraná state. The interviews were performed in June of 2011, at the subjects’ homes and at Basic Health Units, using guiding questions. Data analysis was performed using the content analysis technique, thematic mode, proposed by Bardin. Results showed there is a paradox between the view of the relatives and the nurses, and that difference stimulated us to reconsider if nurses are truly aware of their role towards the studied population. Finally, we realize the need for nurses to recognize their real competencies, as coordinators of the health team and as the ones responsible for the home care, making themselves present in the direct care to individuals with cancer and their families.
