| Sumario: | This thesis addresses the relationship between school library educational practices and its relationship with the school culture. The research was conducted in Brazilian municipal schools, in Belo Horizonte. At first, the concept of effective school library was presented as a library that offers access to the collection and works as space for learning. The research aimed at discussing the nature of the school culture that supports a successful library program. The goal was to diagnose and analyze educational practices in Brazilian school libraries and their relationship with school culture in the following aspect: how the environment affects and produces behaviors and actions related to the school library. The sample was composed by three school libraries, from public schools in Belo Horizonte. Principals, school librarians and two teachers from each school were interviewed. The data was collected using semi-structured surveys, characterizing the study as a qualitative in-depth research. Three important findings expose the relationship between school library and school culture: the presence of a collaborative culture, a specific school structure that supports the library and the school library as a differentiated space. The findings highlight the principals key role to the establishment and maintenance of a quality school library program. The autonomy was commented on by principals, librarians and teachers, and its presence was identified as a school culture factor. Teacher-librarian collaboration projects were emphasized as an important school culture element. These aspects provide the perspective that there is a school culture that benefits the school librarys effectiveness. |
