Sumario:The object of this study is inserted in the context of the activities of auxiliary and technical nurses at the University Hospital of the University of São Paulo (HU / USP). It is centered in the perceptions of nurses and heads of that institution's Continuing Education Department on their expectations about staff role changing. The Nurse Practice Acts (NPAs), No. 7498/86 establishes the legal scope of auxiliary and technical nurses. Based on this we analyze the activities performed by the two categories. The aim of this study is to know and to understand the nurses'expectations, desires and projects in respect to role changing. Interviews were conducted and submitted to the process of content analysis proposed by Bardin. We found three categories in the analysis of discourses, which refer to changes in the professional's attitude in technical-scientific knowledge and teamwork. We stress that the person can relate positively or negatively to any of these categories and the same subject can refer to all three categories. Along the study we discussed the possible causes for these facts and compared them with the literature on the subject.
