| Sumario: | Working-class mutual aid societies in Brazil, between the mid-Nineteenth century and the first decades of the Twentieth century, have been subject to diverse and frequently conflicting interpretations. On the one hand, some of these interpretations have turned to these societies as a particular form of labor organization. On the other, are interpretations stressing the role of mutualism as a form of insurance against a number of risks, in some cases adopting the Rational Choice Theory. This last approach has been particularly critical on the first. Nevertheless, far from being opposed these two approaches can jointly contribute in different ways for further knowledge on working-class organizations and practices. |
