Sumario:From interrogations concerning the validity of a psychoanalytical clinic with babies, we propose, in this dissertation, to conduct a theoretical study about Winnicott´s method called "Observation of babies in an established situation" (Winnicott, 1978/1941), in order to recover the theoretical and clinical range of this instrument. With this method Winnicott describes a particular pattern of infant behavior in a specific setting with the mother, which occurs with the presence of a brilliant spatula that through its brightness attracts the baby's attention.Safra (1999) considers that the observation of babies in an established situation a matrix of Winnicott's thought, which makes it crucial for understanding the theoretical framework of the author. Through a literature revision we discuss Winnicott's work and promote a debate of his theory with related areas. Allied to this, we perform a systematization of his theory of maturation, as well as of its clinical method of infant observation. We believe that the observation of babies in an established situation is an instrument able to recognize the early signs of baby suffering, in time to prevent this chronic condition. The purpose of this study is to disseminate and encourage the use of this Winnicottian instrument.
