| Sumario: | The Ecological Footprint (PE) is a measure of the burden imposed by a population on nature, and represents the area of support for resource consumption levels and waste generation. The objective of the work was to calculate and evaluate the PE of João Monlevade-MG. For the calculation, the conventional method proposed by Wackernagel and Rees in the 90s was used, based on the sum of the footprint of the variables, calculated from the annual average of consumption items of aggregated data dividing the total consumption by the size of the population, subtracted from Biocapacity. João Monlevade Biocapacity and PE of 0.048 and 0.643 ha/hab, respectively, and, therefore, local consumption exceeds the support capacity of the natural environment, and an appropriate environmental planning for the municipality is necessary. The largest footprint was related to CO2 emission from burning fossil fuels, 0.47 ha/hab., Indicating the need to implement mitigating measures. It is concluded that the calculation of the municipality's PE, points out more sustainable ways for better quality of life of the population. However, it requires improvement of the calculation, defining other relevant indicators, and careful analysis of the data. |
