| Summary: | In this article our goal is, fundamentally, to present the organizational structure of an agency that promotes, coordinates and monitors the fight against doping in world sport - the World Anti-Doping Agency. Our intention was to use the concepts of biopolitics and governmentality to think about transnational doping policies that aim to govern doped and undoped bodies. We draw our reflection from the analysis of the tests “out of competition”. WADA's operation, structure and policies are here analyzed as biopolitical devices that operate fundamentally in the policing of athletic bodies. Michel Foucault's studies of governmentality help to think of WADA as a transnational institution with its regulatory practices that formalize anti-doping policies in all countries. From the whole set of anti-doping policies proposed by WADA, we suggest that it builds a culture of vigilance over the athlete body, producing a discipline and regulation of the behavior of athletic bodies. WADA is not limited to operating to detect who is doped and who is not through drug testing and penalize athletes who are supposed to have used prohibited substances. On the contrary, WADA's attempts are to govern doping practices by administering a series of programs and implementing disciplinary and biopolitical mechanisms. WADA builds a culture of vigilance over athlete body, not only disciplining athletic bodies, but also governing the health and performance of high performance athletes as well as expanding their ideas of sport and health to the entire population, Since the athlete body is considered as the norm of the healthy body, the standard to be followed, keeping the proportions, for the whole population. In this sense, anti-doping is taken here as a fundamental technology for governing the bodies of athletes, how their effects are reflected in the production of healthy bodies, in a link between sport and health. |
