Resumo:This article aims to discuss the spatiality of the highland fields in the Minas Gerais portion of Mantiqueira Mountain Range, differentiating such plant formations according to their relationship with the physical environment. In the region of the great escarpments of Southeast Brazil, emphatically in the Mantiqueira Mountain Range, such phytophysiognomies tend to occur at altitudes above 1800 m, with rock types as their main differentiating factor. In this way, five biogeographic units concerning the highlands of southeastern Brazil were discerned, in which the altitude grasslands differ physiognomically and floristically, a division reinforced by phytogeographic and zoogeographic endemisms: (1) alkaline massif of Itatiaia, marked by nepheline-syenites (2) Caparaó massif, disjoint antiform framed by gneisses and migmatites, (3) Serra do Ibitipoca, supported by quartzites and (4) Serra do Papagaio, supported mainly by gneiss-granite and (5) Campos do Jordão Plateau, also based on the predominance of gneisses.
