Sumario:Several factors associated with cancer diagnosis and treatment can lead patients to experience negative emotional experiences, that interfere with their ability to deal effectively with the disease, the so-called distress. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the scientific productions about the influence of religiosity / spirituality (R / E) in coping and reducing distress in cancer patients. A systematic review of the literature was carried out based on the PRISMA protocol, in the databases: Medline (PUBMED), Lilacs, Scopus, Web of Science and PsychINFO. The sample consisted of 20 empirical studies, published between 2009 and 2018. Data were found that support a complex association between R / E and distress, as well as positive clinical implications of interventions in the area. Thus, it is found that R / E is a powerful tool in managing distress. It should be noted that it is necessary to promote research on this subject in Brazil, as well as to expand it to other groups, such as children and adolescents.
