| Summary: | This article analyzes travel reports by two South-American diplomats in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries – Argentinean Miguel Cané and Brazilian Miguel de Oliveira Lima. In their travel across Caribbean, Colombia and Venezuela, they wrote articles and narratives on local issues and suggested new interpretations of Latin-American history as a whole. Both regarded the widespread political egalitarianism as the cause of political instability in the continent, arguing for the resumption of aristocratic values. They shared some of the principles of Arielistic imaginary, widely spread in Latin America at that time, by defending moderate liberalism adopted by modernist elites, and a selective political system as solutions for chronic instability in places they visited. |
