| Sumario: | The article analyzes the conflicts experienced by caiçaras andquilombolas in the Bocaina region (states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo) regardingaccess to territory, natural resources, and public services, which guarantee the qualityof life for traditional communities and allow for the maintenance of their ways of lifeand, consequently, contribute to sustainability. The qualitative methodology includesa bibliographic review, document analysis, and on-site interviews in thecommunities. The conclusions indicate that there were normative and institutionalachievements for traditional peoples and communities, expressed both inparticipatory governance mechanisms that boosted the mobilization and socialorganization of these communities and in a set of public policies that guaranteedthem rights. However, a critical deficit in achieving these rights weakens the social 3 and political inclusion of traditional communities as participants in preservingbiodiversity and constructing sustainable development goals. |
